Report: Virginia has seen 40 police killings of mentally ill in recent years

A Pilot analysis has revealed that mentally ill people in Virginia are disproportionately victims of police shootings. While nationally, mentally ill people make up about 25% of those killed by police, they found that in the commonwealth that number is about 40%. The Pilot says 12 of 40 of the mentally ill killed by police since 2010 were in Hampton Roads, and the slayings, experts say, are attributed to years of cutbacks to mental health care funding.
